3/30/1897 Mrs. L.H. Pammel Ames, Iowa Dear Friends:-- Time and again have I set apart a time to ans. your letter, but something unforeseen always comes up, and this is a place where they are constantly appearing. I am enjoying my work very much indeed, the weather is simply superb, and as for flowers. I never saw anything like it. This is indeed a new world to Iowa. Very poor to be sure but many things to make it pleasant. I like it so much better than I thought I would at first. Yes, I sympathize with the little baby brother and also must for the sisters as they of course must take a seat slightly in the rear now, for awhile, at least. I wish I could tell you all the nice flowers we have in bloom now. [We are having?] ripe strawberries, plenty of lettuce radishes onions etc. It has rained almost incessantly this spring. Our faculty gave an entertainment last night, a farce in one act from the French. I think I have never seen anything rendered so exquisite, and the music was superb. When I get very tired I wish I could run in and see Mr. & Mrs. Pammel as of old, but I cannot, of course. Tell Prof. Pam. That I will send him the list of plants he asks for as soon as I have time to copy them off, as they are in a large book. Ask him to please send my lichens to me if Prof. Fink has returned them as I could use them here to good advantage. How he would enjoy this flora if he was here. I think of him every time I go out collecting. Well as someone is coming to bother me I must close for this time. It is one of the orators for me to drill. Good bye, Love to all. Please tell Mr. and Mrs. ____ to write to me. Shall be ____ [to hear from?] you again. Geo. W. Carver.
