May eighteenth, 1922 Prof. L. B. Schmidt, Campus, Dear Prof. Schmidt: I am sending you some material from Prof. Geo. W. Carver of Tuskegee, Alabama, on which I wish to make the following comment. Professor Carver came to me and Mrs. Pammel and I tried to get a room for him. Among the people consulted was Tama Jim Wilson or rather Mrs. Wilson. A room could not be found for him, largely I think because he was a colored boy and therefore I gave him the use of the room I had in North Hall, which he occupied during the entire time he was here. The people to whom I applied for a room liked Mr. Carver well enough but owing to the fact that he was a colored boy they all said they would not like to have him in the house. That is the reason why I gave him the use of the room I had the disposition of. Mr. Carver was then the only colored boy in the institution and for that matter, the only one in Ames.
