September 19th, 1923 President Hillman, Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa. Dear President Hillman: I find an item concerning Prof. G. W. Carver in the Ames Evening Tribune of Sept 17th, the substance of your remarks on education. Prof. Carver came to me from Indianola and was one of my special students in botany. I am very much interested in Prof. Carver because he worked for the department of botany during his entire course and was one of my assistants at one time. He certainly has made good. I have followed his career at Tuskegee with unusual interest and satisfaction. Miss Etta Budd of Ames taught art at Simpson where she met Prof. Carver and she brought him to me. It was in this way he became associated with the department of botany here. Yours truly, P/T
