12/9/1899 My dear Prof. Pammel, I am in Rec. of your esteemed favor containing determinations, for which accept thanks. I beg leave to say that some of the specimens sent you are very peculiar indeed, some of them form no spots at all but mere yellow patches much like the Pironos. Sometimes by holding the specimen between yourself & strong light the spores may be seen (i.e. spores & conidia) again I found great difficulty in locating items from dried specimens until I put the specimens in a moist chamber for an hour or two to soften, otherwise the spores seemed to all break to pieces beyond recognition. In the examination of all the Rhus Cer. of which 22 is one you will I think have no trouble if you moisten a little for about 1 hour and scrape the upper surface of the spots do not cut out. In fact you can see it by holding between your eye & the light if it has not been rubbed off in transportation. I sent you the abstract of my paper yesterday. I have told Mr. Bain that you have it. Pardon me for the Sec7. I make to you, of many I have plenty of material 22 for 2x. Very truly G. W. Carver
